You unbox your new laptop, fire it up, and within days—sometimes hours—you’re logged into Facebook, Instagram, and X. A week later, your account posts strange links. Your password is changed. You scream, “I’ve been hacked!” The truth is far less glamorous, and far more uncomfortable: you bought a machine pre-loaded with pirated software, and that software came with extra baggage no one told you about. Keyloggers. Remote access trojans. Cryptominers. Ransomware cells waiting for the right moment. Remote Access Trojans (RATs): They Can See You, Right Now
A RAT gives an attacker the ability to view your screen, browse your files, and—most disturbingly—activate your webcam without the little indicator light turning on. We have seen cases where intimate footage was captured and used for blackmail. In Kenya, several public figures and ordinary citizens have been extorted for thousands of shillings after their cracked Photoshop installation came with a hidden RAT. The celebrity doesn’t want to admit they were using illegal software, so they stay silent. But the damage is done.
Ransomware
Ransomware encrypts all your documents, photos, and work files and demands payment in cryptocurrency to unlock them. Many pirated copies of Windows contain dormant ransomware that triggers weeks after installation, giving you a false sense of safety before the hammer drops.
Cryptominers
If your Core i7 laptop with 16GB of RAM takes forever to open a browser tab, and the fan screams like a kettle, you might be unknowingly mining cryptocurrency for someone in a basement in Eastern Europe. Cracked operating systems often include stealth miners that eat 90% of your CPU and GPU resources, aging your hardware prematurely and hiking your electricity bill.
These are not hypotheticals. In 2024, a Kenyan media personality lost control of her verified Instagram page for two weeks, with hackers posting explicit content. Forensic analysis traced the breach not to a SIM swap, but to a keylogger that had been pre-installed alongside a pirated copy of Microsoft Office on her personal laptop.

Yet people pay shop technicians Ksh 3,000 to install a “Windows 11 Pro Activated” version that disables security updates and includes a hidden cryptominer.

3D & Motion - Blender Instead of Pirated Cinema 4D

Church Presentations - BibleShow, Not Pirated EasyWorship
Many Kenyan churches run pirated copies of EasyWorship, even though BibleShow exists and is entirely free. It projects lyrics, Bible verses, and multimedia smoothly, without the guilt of theft or the fear of malware corrupting the sanctuary’s computer. Yet church tech teams either don’t know, or have been convinced by a local vendor that the cracked version is “better.” It’s not. It’s just more dangerous.

Let’s do the maths on two actual scenarios we’ve encountered.
